Words Their Way Spelling Sorts

Words Their Way Step 1:
Gather the necessary supplies:
your spelling sort list;
a pair of scissors;
a pencil;
a lined piece of paper.
Words Their Way Step 2:
Cut off the border and recycle.
Cut your categories along with the words in bold.
Cut all spelling words apart.
Words Their Way Step 3:
Sound out words and look at spelling patterns.
Place words in correct categories,
and write each one on your lined paper.
Words Their Way Step 4:
Keep going until all of your spelling words
are in the correct categories.
You may notice that you have a few "oddballs"
that don't fall into the regular pattern. Sorry!
You just have to memorize those differences.

In the classroom, you will now record your spelling sort into an iTouch.
This will help with fluency and getting the spelling patterns in your mind.
If you have a recording device at home, don't be shy about using it.

Good luck. You can do it!

Handy Information for Room 17

Welcome! Here are a few business items I believe will help us become a dynamic, considerate, hard-working school family.

Birthdays: Birthdays are super exciting! However, due to food allergies, cost, and scheduling, we will not be having any birthday parties in class. We will sing ‘Happy Birthday’ to recognize your child’s special day. Private invitations may be placed in take-home folders before or after school.

Coding: Students (with their headphones) meet in the computer lab each Wednesday from 3-4pm for a free coding class that runs until Spring Break.

Homework: The third graders in Room 17 must read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. Being read to, using online reading programs, reading traditional books, using an e-reader, and reading out loud all count towards this goal. Just read as much as possible!

If your child brings home any homework, it means the work was not completed in class.

Snack: Children are encouraged to bring a healthy, portable snack to eat outside during our daily10:25 Brain Break. Refillable water bottles are a great way to stay hydrated.

Volunteers: Volunteers are a marvelous addition to our team. You are welcome anytime in Room 17, or join us on field trips. Sign-up for a time slot or activity posted outside Room 17. All volunteers must have a current background check. Forms in office.

I am truly thrilled about our year together! If you have any questions or concerns, hopes and dreams, please feel free to stop in before or after school, or contact me at pkennedy@pps.net.
